Biography

John Barton was born in 1773 in Upholland and baptized on 5 September  1773 at Upholland St. Thomas. The baptism record identifies his father as Thomas Barton of Upholland, Plaisterer (sic).

Our earliest definite record of John is his daughter Ellen’s baptism record in which he identifies himself as a labourer living in Skelmersdale. He was enumerated in the 1841 census living at a place called Grimshaw in Skelmersdale with Ellen and several grandchildren, including Ann Barton. His occupation is given as delphmaster indicating that he worked in a quarry. At the time of the 1851 census, John was still living in Skelmersdale with five grandchildren at age 77; he identified himself as a widower. He died in 1854 at age 81, leaving behind a will. He was buried in the churchyard at Upholland St. Thomas on 13 November 1854.
