22 Pottery Street was the residence of Ann Barton (b. 1840), her daughter Margaret (b. 1877) and two grandchildren at the time of the 1901 census. This was also the address at which Ann’s husband, Edward Barton, died in June, 1904. At the time of the 1911 census Ann Barton, age 70, was still living at 22 Pottery Street with her daughter Margaret and son-in-law James Hilton and four of their children. Also living with the family was a family of four boarders. According to the census the house had 5 rooms and 12 occupants.
Pottery Street was in the northwest corner of Poolstock between the Western Mills and Central Tramway Depot between the River Douglas and the Leeds & Liverpool canal. This 1908 Ordinance Survey map of the northern end of Poolstock shows its location running between Pottery Terrace and the Winstanley Colliery railway. It is difficult to imagine how dismal this little residential area surrounded by filthy industrial plants must have been.
Pottery Street no longer exists. There is an industrial facility on the west side of Pottery Terrace today where Pottery Street once was.
