130 Barnsley Street, Wigan

This house was probably the home of Joseph Harrison (b.1835) Henry Harold’s grandfather, and Joseph’s two spinster daughters, Ellen (b.1867) and Margaret (b.1875), during the early 20th century. Also living at this home was Joseph’s orphaned granddaughter, Alice Harrison (b.1889) whom Joseph, Ellen, and Margaret cared for after her parents Edward and Martha died in 1894.

Joseph Harrison died at 130 Barnsley Street in 1908. When his daughter Ellen registered the death she also gave 130 Barnsley Street as her address.

Alice Harrison, who was only five years old when her parents died, also died at 130 Barnsley Street in 1918 at the age of 29. When her aunt Margaret registered the death she likewise gave her address as 130 Barnsley Street.

Alice’s older brother John Harrison (b.1883) lived just up the street at 179 Barnsley, when he registered the death of their sister Martha (b.1886) in 1946.

130 Barnsley Street is about 1km northwest of Wigan town centre in a residential neighbourhood.
