Biography

Jane Winnard was born in Shevington, a village near Wigan, in 1719. She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Winnard. Jane was baptized at St. Wilfrid’s Anglican church in Standish on 1 April 1719.

Jane married Henry Ball at All Saints Church in Wigan on 21 November 1739 at age 20. Henry and Jane lived most of their married lives in Dalton, a village on the northern outskirts of Skelmersdale. Henry first worked as a quarryman and later as a farmer. According to the baptism records at St. Thomas the Martyr Anglican church in Upholland, the couple had six children between 1740 and 1756. Jane’s husband Henry died in 1776. Jane died in 1799 around age 80. They are both buried in the churchyard at St. Thomas.
