Biography

Henry Ball, the son of Edward Ball (b. 1686), was born in Upholland in 1715. He was baptized at St. Thomas the Martyr Anglican church on 13 January 1716. He married Jane Winnard at All Saints Church in Wigan on 21 November 1739. Henry and Jane went on to have six children between 1740 and 1756.

Henry and his family lived in the area of Dalton, a village just north of Skelmersdale. The baptismal records of their children suggest that Henry and Jane may also have resided in Upholland for a period of time when their son Edward was born (although such registers are not always accurate). Henry worked as a delfman, or quarry worker, from the time of his marriage until about 1747. His younger brother John also worked as a delfmen. (Further research might identify the quarry in the Skelmersdale area where the Ball brothers worked in the mid-18th century.) In 1747 Henry took up farming in Dalton.

Henry died in Upholland in 1776, aged 61. He was buried in the churchyard at St. Thomas on March 21. We have not yet looked for his grave.
