Indenture of Apprenticeship

This Indenture made the thirteenth day of May one thousand nine hundred and one between Henry Harrison of the Honey Suckle Hotel Poolstock Wigan in the County of Lancaster Licensed Victualler and Henry Harold Harrison his son of the same address who attained the age of fourteen years on the eighteenth day of May one thousand nine hundred of the first part and Robert George Dawson of Station Road Wigan aforesaid Joiner and Builder of the other part Witnesseth that in consideration of the covenants and agreements hereinafter contained on the part of the said Robert George Dawson to be paid observed and performed, he the said Henry Harrison hath put placed and bounden, and by these presents doth put place and bind his son the said Henry Harold Harrison and the said Henry Harold Harrison of his own free will doth hereby put place and bind himself apprentice with the said Robert Goerge Dawson until the said Henry Harold Harrison shall attain the age of twenty one years to be by him the said Robert George Dawson taught instructed and employed in the trade business or occupation of Joiner in or about his works and premises at or within five miles of Wigan And the said Henry Harrison doth hereby for himself his heirs executors and administrators, covenant and agree with the said Robert George Dawson his executors, administrators and assigns in manner following that is to say that he the said Henry Harold Harrison shall and will truly and faithfully serve the said Robert George Dawson in the trade, business, or occupation of a Joiner at Wigan or wherever his works may be, within a distance of five miles and diligently attend to the business concerns thereof until the expiration of the said term and whenever requested by the said Robert George Dawson or such representative of the said Robert George Dawson, and also of him and his partner or partners (if any) as he shall be placed under, whether by day or by night and subject to the rules then in force for the regulation of the works and premises of the said Robert George Dawson and during the term and time aforesaid he the said Henry Harold Harrison shall not nor wilfully do any damage or injury to the said Robert George Dawson nor knowingly suffer the same to be done by others without acquainting him the said Robert George Dawson therewith but shall his secrets keep and will acquit and demean himself as an honest, industrious and faithfull apprentice ought to do and further that he the said Henry Harrison his executors and administrators shall and will at his and their own costs, charges and expenses find and provide for the said Henry Harold Harrison from time to time and at all times during the said term and time all necessary tools, and sufficient meat and drink clothes, apparel washing lodging and medical attendance suitable for an apprentice, in consideration whereof he the said Robert George Dawson doth accept and take the said Henry Harold Harrison as his apprentice and doth hereby for himself his heirs executors and administrators covenant and promise and agree to and with the said Henry Harrison in manner following that is to say that he the said Robert George Dawson shall and will during the said term and time employ teach and instruct or cause to be employed taught and instructed the said Henry Harold Harrison in the said trade, business or occupation of a Joiner in or about the said works and premises and all and every the said matters and things incident or relating thereto And shall and will pay or cause to be paid unto the said Henry Harold Harrison the following wages that is to say the sum of five shillings weekly and every week until the eighteenth day of May one thousand nine hundred and two which period is to be considered the first year of the said term, the sum of six shillings weekly and every week during the second year of the said term, the sum of seven shillings weekly and every week during the third year of the said term, the sum of eight shillings weekly and every week during the fourth year of the said term, the sum of ten shillings weekly and every week during the fifth year of the said term, the sum of twelve shillings weekly and every week during the last or remaining year of the said term and will pay the said Henry Harold Harrison for overtime at the customary remuneration And further that in case the said Robert George Dawson shall at any time during the said term employ the apprentice away from Wigan aforesaid in or about any work being carried on by or under his superintendence that he Robert George Dawson shall and will pay where necessary for the lodging of the apprentice during the time he shall be away from Wigan aforesaid on the business or employment of the said Robert George Dawson Provided always and it is hereby covenanted and agreed between and by the said parties hereto that if the said apprentice shall at any time during the said term absent himself from the service of his said master in consequence of sickness accident or otherwise it shall be lawful for the said Robert George Dawson his executors administrators or assigns to retain and deduct out of the said wages or weekly sums hereinbefore agreed to be paid to the said apprentice a proportionate part thereof for all such times as the said apprentice shall so neglect or absent himself anything hereinbefore contained to the contrary notwithstanding. But this proviso shall not hinder or prevent the said Robert George Dawson his executors administrators or assigns from commencing or taking proceedings for the breach of all or any of the covenants hereinbefore contained In Witness whereof the said parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first before written.
