Shuttleworth Arms
Barton
Broughton

The Shuttleworth Arms was the residence of Henry Barton at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Swarbrick in May 1838. Henry gave his occupation as a “Brewer” so we can assume that he was living and working at the Shuttleworth Arms.

The Shuttleworth Arms was located on what is today called the A6, or Garstang Road, in Broughton. On the marriage register Henry gave the inn’s location as Barton. However multiple sources give the inn’s location as Broughton. Barton and Broughton are only a few kilometres apart on the A6 and it is highly unlikely that there were two “Shuttleworth Arms” in the area (although the proprietor may have changed locations but retained the name).

A 2017 article on the Broughton Bypass published by the Lancashire Post provides some colourful descriptions of the A6 in the 19th and 20th centuries. According to the article the Shuttleworth Arms was later renamed Trader Jack’s, then Burlington’s and is now the Broughton Inn.
