Biography

Thomas Winnard was the father of Jane Winnard. Very little information on who Thomas Winnard was or where he originated is known. The parish records of St. Wilfrid’s Anglican church state that he lived in Shevington from 1719 until 1735 and was married to Elizabeth. In addition to Jane, Thomas and Elizabeth baptized a son John at St. Wilfrid’s in 1723. Thomas died in 1735 and is buried in the church yard at Standish St. Wilfrid. His grave has not been located.

Research Notes

The IGI records a Thomas Winward (note the different spelling) from Westhoughton, Lancs. who married Elizabeth Carlile of Weshoughton in 1710. Westhoughton is about 15 km west of Shevington. It may be difficult, however, to link the two Thomases definitively without further research. His headstone at St. Wilfrid church may provide useful information. In addition, the church records for St. Bartholomew in Westhoughton may help confirm or eliminate Thomas Winward as the same Thomas Winnard.
