Byrom Street, Poolstock, Wigan

6 Byrom Street was the Poolstock home of Joseph Harrison (b. 1835) and Ellen Ball (b. 1832), Henry Harold Harrison Sr.’s grandparents, with their children from about 1866 until the early 1870s. They first moved to this address with their five children circa 1866 from Wood Street in the centre of Wigan. Their daughters Ellen (b. 1867) and Alice (b. 1870) were both born at this house. Joseph, Ellen, and their seven oldest children were all enumerated at 6 Byrom Street in the 1871 census.

Elizabeth Donahue (b. 1875) lived with her family at 61 Byrom Street at the time of the 1891 census.

Thomas Thompson and Annie Barton moved to 69 Byrom Street circa 1894. They were living at this address when their daughter Mary Ann was born in May 1895; when their son James Edward was born in 1897; when their daughter Florence was born in 1899; when daughter Annie was born in March 1901; and again at the time of the 1901 census four days later. Edward Barton was also living here with his daughter at the time of the 1901 census.

Byrom Street was 1 block west of Pool Street, running north-south between Brook Street and Park Street. Judging from this map (image, left) the houses in this neighbourhood were row houses about 14 feet wide and 25 feet deep, or about 700 square feet, assuming that they were two stories high. Each house appears to have had a small garden in the back which at the time would have contained the outhouse.

Byrom Street no longer exists. Poolstock was substantially redeveloped sometime in the 20th century. It appears that Byrom Street was razed to provide for larger residential lots on adjacent Pool and Chadwick Streets.
