Biography

Samuel Speakman was born in Blackpool on 10 December 1898 to Thomas George Speakman, a house painter, and Annie Adamson. Samuel grew up in his parents home at 45 Bloomfield Road, Blackpool. He had two older sisters, Florence and Frances Emma as well as three younger brothers George William, Arthur, and Herbert. Samuel became a pork butcher by trade.

On 12 October 1922 Samuel married Janet Hart Mawdsley at All Saints Church in Blackpool. They had one daughter, Joan born in 1924. Samuel and his family lived in Blackpool at 159 Palatine Road according to the 1939 Register . In 1939 Samuel was a foreman or supervisor in charge of porkery production, cutting and curing, presumably in a meat packing plant.

The family eventually moved to Liverpool where they lived at162 Gateacre Park Drive. Samuel’s wife died of breast cancer in Liverpool in 1985. Her death certificate lists Samuel’s occupation as “retired”.
