90 Warrington Lane, Wigan, was the residence of Ann Barton and several of her children (EllenJohnRichardMargaret) at the 1891 census. She evidently moved here from nearby Harrogate Street sometime in the 1880s. Ann’s husband, Edward, was not enumerated in this census and may have travelled to New York. Ann gave her occupation as “grocer” and she may have had a shop at this location.

Ethel Barton was born here to Ann’s daughter, Annie Barton, in October 1891, three months before Annie married Thomas Thompson. Annie was enumerated at the Honeysuckle Inn in 1891. Annie also gave 90 Warrington Lane as her address when she married Thomas Thompson in January 1892. Thomas gave his address as 76 Warrington Lane, so Annie and Thomas were neighbours. Annie’s second daughter Alice Ann Thompson was born at 90 Warrington Lane in February 1893, suggesting that Thomas Thompson and Annie Barton moved in with Annie’s mother after their marriage in 1892. (Alice Ann’s birth registration actually gives 90 Warrington Lane as her place of birth and 9 Warrington Lane as her mother’s residence; this latter address is almost certainly a clerical error). By 1895 Thomas and Annie were living on Byrom Street in Poolstock.

Warrington Lane runs south off Millgate in Wigan town centre. The area has been redeveloped and the original house is no longer there. From the census taker’s route we can infer that 90 Warrington Lane was between Millgate and Darlington.
