Daniel Ball (b. 1849) died at the Wigan Union Workhouse in 1890. Daniel was likely both poor and infirm by 1890 as he had spinal cord sclerosis and both of his parents were deceased.

Workhouses were a longstanding British institution for housing the poor, who were required to work in exchange for their room and board. By the time Daniel died in 1890 many or most workhouse inmates were elderly and/or mentally or physically infirm. A brief history of the Wigan Union Workhouse can be found at The Workhouse Website.

The Wigan Union Workhouse was located on the north side of Frog Lane. The workhouse closed circa 1930. The buildings were used for other purposes until 1970 when they were closed and later demolished.
