Manor Farm was the home of Daniel Ball (b. 1813), Ann Yates and their family at the time of the 1871 census. Daniel died in 1879, however Parsonage Lane was still the home of Ann and her children at the time of the 1881 census. Although the residence is described differently in the two census records it is definitely the same farm.

Manor Farm was at the corner of Chorley Road and Rectory Lane next to Standish Station house and rectory in Standish (see map). It was just a short distance from Heywoods in Haigh where Daniel grew up on his parents’ farm. Inexplicably, the census-taker in 1881 identified Rectory Lane as Parsonage Lane! The Rectory referred to here is that of St Wilfrid’s church in Standish, located just west of the Rectory.

Today although the area is still rural there is a housing estate on the property once occupied by Manor Farm. There is no longer a train station on Rectory Lane.
