Biography

Margaret Edith Barton was the youngest daughter of Edward and Ann Barton. She was born in her parents home, the Corporation Inn, on August 8, 1877 and baptised on August 19 at St. Thomas Church in Wigan. In 1881 at age 3 she was enumerated living with her family at 20-22 Harrogate Street, Wigan. In 1891 Margaret was enumerated at 90 Warrington Lane with her mother, siblings and three boarders. Margaret was attending school.

On 9 January 1897 Margaret gave birth out of wedlock to her first child, Ann. On 7 July 1899 she gave birth to her second child, Edward, also out of wedlock.

At the time of the 1901 census Margaret and her family were living at 22 Pottery Street where she was employed in the family confectionary business as a “sugar boiler”.
